TUNG OIL

GENERAL

The amber-colored and pungent drying oil, TUNG OIL (also called China Wood Oil or Nut Oil ), is obtained from the seeds of a tropical tree, the tung tree of the spurge family, and from seeds of some related species, all from Indomalesia or W Pacifica by simply heating grounding, and pressing as the poisonous seeds contain more than 50% tung oil. It is widly used as a dryer in varnishes and paints as tung oil polymerizes to a hard, waterproof gel that is highly resistant to acids and alkalies. It is also used as a component of insulating compounds and in the manufacture of linoleum and oilcloth.
